Darrell Joseph Mitchell was born on 20 May 1991 in Hamilton. His father John Mitchell has been a player and coach of the New Zealand rugby team. Darrell also played rugby in his childhood, but he started playing cricket when his father became the coach of a rugby club in England. When he was 16 years old, his father started coaching in the Rugby Club of Australia. Here too Mitchell continued to play his cricket. Gradually his cricket got better, and in 2019 he got an opportunity to make his international debut. Mitchell is a middle order batsman and right arm medium fast bowler.

Williamson sent him for the opening in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup. This experiment of the captain was also successful. Mitchell made his T20 International debut on 6 February 2019 in Wellington match against India. Darrell has played 21 T20 Internationals so far.
